Physical security for homes

A clear review of what protects the house, and what it does with the footage

Home cameras, locks and alarms are connected devices, and many keep video in a cloud account. SMC reviews the home, designs a sensible setup and leaves every purchase to the owner.

What SMC does, and who does the rest

SMC assesses, designs, writes the specification and acts as owner's representative. SMC does not sell or install equipment and does not program panels. A licensed installer contracts directly with the client, and the client owns the equipment, the accounts and the footage. SMC takes no commissions from any vendor. How SMC works with installers.

The five-part starter scope

Most homes get the most protection from these, in roughly this order, with little new hardware.

1. Every door reinforced as one system

Door, frame, strike and hinge side treated together, including the back door and the door from the garage into the house. A locksmith or carpenter does the work; SMC writes what it must achieve and checks it.

2. Dusk-to-dawn lighting

A night walk, lighting at every entry and dark side of the house, aimed to avoid glare and neighbours’ windows. It also makes camera images usable at night.

3. Review of the cameras and accounts the family already owns

Multi-factor sign-in on, shared logins removed, devices on their own network segment, audio off, privacy masks on neighbours and the street, and a written settings guide to follow. Often no new hardware.

4. A vendor-neutral verified alarm

A camera view for each alarm zone, cellular backup, professional monitoring where police response is wanted, and a written family response plan. A licensed installer fits it, or the owner installs on their own property.

5. Keyless entry

Lock grade and a code policy for family, cleaners and caregivers, with a mechanical override, so lost keys and old copies stop being a risk.

For older adults living at home

For many older adults, fraud is a bigger risk than burglary. The setup adds a few quiet protections the person can see and agree to.

  • Door verification, so a stranger at the door can be seen and talked to without opening it.
  • A simple scam-call protocol: who to call, what never to give out, and a family check-in.
  • A medical alert with a button and an escalation chain, so help is called in a set order.

What the owner also gets

Options, not a sales pitch

A few product options at different cost levels. SMC sells nothing and takes no commissions.

Footage and privacy decisions

Where video is stored, who can see it, how long it is kept, and whether to share clips with neighbours or police.

Annual check

A light yearly review of accounts, firmware, codes, batteries, lighting and doors.

Privacy and control defaults on every design

  • Audio recording is off by default. Recording conversations without consent is unlawful in New York, and a sign does not fix it.
  • Face recognition is off by default, and never used in New York schools.
  • Notices and signs are included where the law requires them, such as employee monitoring notices.
  • SMC never holds the system passwords, codes or admin logins, and never services the equipment. The owner holds them.

How it works

  1. 1. Free 30-minute call

The house, the concern and what is already installed.

  2. 2. Free security assessment, gap report and free results review

The free online assessment, a written gap report and a free review of the results.

  3. 3. Home review and design

A walk by day and at night, a check of devices and accounts, and a short design with priorities.

  4. 4. Licensed partners build; SMC checks

The owner contracts partners directly. SMC checks the work against the design and runs acceptance.

Project management included on request. SMC can run the project as the owner's representative: schedule, partner coordination, bids, change control, progress reporting, acceptance and handover.

Built to New York State and local rules

Every design and project follows New York State law and the rules of the city, town or village: building and fire codes and exit (egress) requirements, local alarm permit and false-alarm ordinances, licensing of the installers SMC works with (NY General Business Law Article 6-D), and recording and notice laws.

SMC designs to these requirements and checks the work against them. Licensed partners pull permits where required. This is design practice, not legal advice, and SMC cannot guarantee that an authority will approve a permit or inspection.

SMC's home offer is deliberately small. Businesses and public bodies are the main focus, and a home review is a good fit for owners who want a vendor-neutral second opinion before buying or after an incident.
