How SMC works with installers
SMC designs and checks. Licensed installers build.
Each does what it is licensed and equipped to do. The client contracts the installer directly, so the client owns the system, the accounts and the footage from the first day.
Who does what
SMC
- Assessment and risk picture
- Design, drawings and specification
- Bid criteria and quote comparison
- Owner's representative: project management, submittal review, checks of the work, acceptance review
- Cybersecurity, privacy and policy work
- Ongoing program reviews
The licensed installer
- Supplies the equipment and contracts with the client
- Installs, programs and commissions the system
- Hands over admin accounts and codes to the client
- Services and maintains the system
- Arranges professional monitoring through a licensed central station
SMC does not sell or install equipment, does not hold the installation contract, does not program panels or hold codes, and takes no commissions or referral fees from vendors or installers.
What SMC asks of installers
New York licenses alarm and security-system installers under General Business Law Article 6-D. The specification SMC writes for the client requires:
Licensed and identified
The installer’s license number and qualifier, and state identification cards for field staff.
Compliant equipment
Equipment that meets the federal Section 889 restrictions, including relabeled products, with a written certification.
Patching in writing
An agreed firmware update schedule and a duty to act on vendor security advisories.
The client owns it all
The client holds the cloud tenant, the panel master code and the admin accounts. Installer accounts are removed at handover.
Clean handover
Device inventory with serial numbers and firmware versions, as-built drawings, and training for the people who will use the system.
Open to review
Access for SMC to check the system through a read-only role the client grants, or by watching the installer make changes.
What SMC manages for the owner
SMC can also run the project end to end as the owner's representative, so the owner is not left to coordinate several trades alone.
Schedule
One plan that sequences the trades, so the electrician, locksmith and installer do not wait on each other.
Partner coordination
SMC is the single point of contact between the owner and the licensed partners.
Bids
Bid package, partner qualifications and licence checks, and a comparison on total cost and exit terms. The owner selects and contracts directly.
Change control
Every change to scope, cost or schedule is written down and approved by the owner before work proceeds.
Progress reporting
Short, regular reports in plain language: done, next, at risk.
Acceptance and handover
Tests against the specification, a punch list, and a clean handover of accounts, codes and documents to the owner.
Built to New York State and local rules
Every design and project follows New York State law and the rules of the city, town or village: building and fire codes and exit (egress) requirements, local alarm permit and false-alarm ordinances, licensing of the installers SMC works with (NY General Business Law Article 6-D), and recording and notice laws.
SMC designs to these requirements and checks the work against them. Licensed partners pull permits where required. This is design practice, not legal advice, and SMC cannot guarantee that an authority will approve a permit or inspection.
How a project flows
1. SMC delivers the design and specification
The client gets options and bid criteria that any qualified installer can quote against.
2. The client chooses and contracts
The client signs with the installer directly. SMC is not a party to the installation contract.
3. The installer builds and programs
SMC manages the schedule and changes, reviews submittals and checks the installed work against the design.
4. Acceptance and handover
SMC runs an acceptance protocol against the specification while the installer operates the tests. The installer hands the accounts and codes to the client.
Installers, integrators and trades
SMC is building a vendor-neutral bench of licensed installers and integrators, central stations, electricians, locksmiths, fence and gate contractors, engineers and managed service providers. Licensed firms that want to be considered, or integrators who want a cybersecurity and privacy sub-consultant on a bid, can book the free call or write to the address below.
